Traditions and celebrations

Ciutadella is full of history and traditions. This has been demonstrated over the years through its experiences in addition to the thousands of visitors who choose it as their destination, above all during their summer vacation.
The union between its own inhabitants and the tourist population to maintain the celebration of Sant Joan turns this event into one of the most spectacular celebrations of all times. Thanks to this, over the last years, it has been converted into something beyond a simple local or island wide celebration.
Now, it is a well-known celebration all over the world.
The Minorquin horse, a pure race, is the protagonist of all the popular celebrations that take place throughout the Minorquin summer. From June to September, horses dressed in black and white, and their riders adorned with bows, embroideries and multicoloured carnations, relive every year a ritual that started at the beginning of the XIV century.
The calendar for popular celebrations is:
June 23 and 24, Sant Joan in Ciutadella.
At the end of July, Es Mercadal, Fornells and Es Castell.
August, practically every weekend, Es Migjorn Gran, Llucmaçanes, Alaior, Sant Climent, Ferreries (24 and 25, Sant Bartomeu) and Sant Lluís.
September 8 and 9, Mare de Déu de Gràcia in Maó.
The most traditional celebrations are those held in Sant Joan.
